We started our day early, driving our truck up the winding roads to the Hollywood Sign. The morning air was warm, with the sun beating down on us. As we hiked up to the sign, we passed several other hikers making their way to the top as well. We talked about our favorite movies and laughed about how some of the best action scenes were filmed right here.
After taking a bunch of selfies with the iconic letters behind us, we stopped and sat to enjoy the breathtaking views from the top. The hike back down was just as enjoyable as the hike up. Once we were back down, we hopped into our truck and headed to Hollywood Boulevard.
After a good hike, it was time to find somewhere to have lunch. Since we were already headed to Hollywood Boulevard, we decided to find a place to eat there. Of course, once we walked the Walk of Fame. We did make it our mission to find the stars of celebrities we knew as we walked the Walk of Fame. We found the stars of Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, and so many more, while geeking out over one of my favorites, The Three Stooges. Now it was time to fill our bellies with good food.
After a day of wandering and exploring, we finally stumbled upon the Running Goose—a pet-friendly restaurant whose name charmingly reminded us of Canada. The place looked inviting, and the mouthwatering aromas wafting from the kitchen instantly drew us in. We settled into their quiet, private patio—a serene spot where we could relax alongside our furry companion.
The staff were nothing short of incredible—warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. They made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. As for the food, it was exceptional: bursting with rich flavors and cooked to tender perfection. Each bite was a delightful experience, leaving us thoroughly satisfied. Discovering this hidden gem was a highlight of our adventure, a perfect blend of comfort and culinary delight that added a memorable chapter to our journey.

As we wandered through the remnants of these old batteries, we couldn't help but imagine the lives of the soldiers who once stood guard here, adding a layer of historical significance to our visit.
However, it was a bit of a mixed experience. The old battery walls were covered in graffiti—some of it artistic and thought-provoking, but much of it less so. Eager for more adventure, we headed to Thousand Steps Beach. Despite its name, it doesn’t actually have a thousand steps—I counted! The descent down the steep staircase was invigorating, but also a bit treacherous, with wet, algae covered, slippery steps making the journey down a bit more challenging.
Each step brought us closer to a hidden paradise. The beach, nestled between rugged cliffs, felt like a secret escape. We explored the tide pools, marveling at the colorful sea anemones and tiny crabs scurrying about.
The tranquility of this secluded spot was a stark contrast to the bustling city above, and we relished the peaceful solitude. We spent time combing the beach for shells and unique rocks, each one a small treasure to remember our visit. The sound of the waves crashing against the shore and the gentle sea breeze made it a perfect, serene escape. Once the sun dipped below the horizon, the night sky transformed into a blanket of stars that seemed to stretch on for eternity, providing a magical end to our day.
Our next stop was Harbor Cove Beach and Ventura Harbor, where we were greeted by incredibly strong winds that nearly lifted us off our feet. The blowing sand felt like tiny shards of glass embedding themselves into our faces, making it a challenging experience. We attempted a leisurely walk through the marina, but the relentless winds made it difficult to enjoy. Once we filled up on delicious food and steaming coffee, we made our way back to the marina with renewed energy. The excitement was palpable as we boarded the boat that would whisk us away to Santa Cruz Island, ready for the thrilling adventure that awaited us.
Our excitement was palpable as we set out on a boat journey to Channel Islands National Park’s Santa Cruz Island. The anticipation of exploring the island and hiking the Pelican Bay Trail filled us with a sense of adventure. Despite the chilly air, the boat ride itself was an exhilarating experience. As we cruised through the ocean, we passed a few oil rigs, their towering structures standing sentinel in the sea. The ocean waves crashed against the hull, sending sprays of salty water our way, and the sea breeze whipped across the deck, heightening our sense of thrill and anticipation.
A few days later, while hiking on some of the beaches, we were dismayed to find crude oil on the sand, along with the occasional dead fish and waterfowl covered in oil. The sight of the oil rigs looming in the distance only added to our frustration. We couldn't help but wonder how much crude oil they were spilling and why it wasn't being cleaned up. Where was their environmental responsibility? This scene was truly upsetting and raised serious concerns about the impact on the local ecosystem.
As we approached Santa Cruz Island, we were greeted by its rugged coastline, characterized by steep cliffs and rocky outcroppings. The sight of the island's pristine beaches filled us with anticipation, yet our excitement was soon tempered by the discovery of crude oil deposits on the sand, likely from oil rig spills. This unsettling sight made us reflect on the environmental impact of human activities, but it didn’t diminish the island’s inherent beauty.
The island's natural splendor was still breathtaking, with its diverse landscapes ranging from rocky shores to verdant hillsides. As we disembarked and set foot on the island, we were eager to immerse ourselves in its wild beauty and begin our hike along the Pelican Bay Trail.

We explored the tide pools along the rocky shore, marveling at the vibrant marine life that thrived in these miniature ecosystems. The rocky shoreline also provided the perfect spot to sit back and soak in the tranquility, watching pelicans glide gracefully above the water.

The panoramic vista was a feast for the eyes, and we felt a profound sense of peace and gratitude for the opportunity to experience such natural beauty.
The hike back from Pelican Bay to the dock was just as breathtaking as the hike in. The trail's beauty continued to captivate us, with every step revealing new wonders of the island's landscape. The boat was running a bit late, which gave us the perfect opportunity to explore the beach and the area around the dock. We wandered along the shoreline, taking in the last bits of our island adventure and soaking up the serene atmosphere.
When the boat finally arrived, we boarded and prepared for the journey back to the mainland. As we sailed across the waters, we were treated to a spectacular sunset. The sky transformed from a clear blue to a fiery orange, creating a stunning display of colors. It was as if the sky itself was ablaze, casting a warm, golden glow over the ocean.
